Quail Creek Backyard
Quail Creek, AZ
This 1,325-square-foot backyard transformation began as a typical “zero-scape”—a sparse arrangement of cactus, scattered boulders, and expanses of gravel that left the space feeling sterile and disconnected from its surroundings. Our vision was to create something entirely different: a natural, native, serene sanctuary for humans, birds, and wildlife alike, one that blurs the line between the yard and the desert beyond and invites both quiet gathering with friends and peaceful wildlife watching.

To bring our vision to life, we used native vegetation and thoughtfully placed boulders arranged to echo the patterns found in nature, framing desert views while softening the sightlines to neighboring homes.
A natural-looking water feature was woven into the hillside, and the planting palette was selected to draw in birds and pollinators—transforming a once-sterile landscape into a living, breathing extension of the desert itself.
The result was a lush desert oasis using rainwater alone, with layered plantings and a water feature carved into the hillside surrounded by native riparian plants. The terraced hillside captures rainwater runoff as it flows down the slope.
